The Academy Theatre's spiral tower
1939
Inglewood, California
S. Charles Lee designed the Academy for Fox West Coast Theatres and it opened on Manchester Boulevard in November 1939. A helical shelf winds up the 125 foot tower and once bounced blue neon onto the letters of the name. It was Lee's fullest Streamline Moderne building, all glass block, curved stainless steel and modern lettering, and it was built in the hope of hosting the Academy Awards, which never came. It has been a church since 1976.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
