The 1968 uprising in Parkland
1968
Parkland, Louisville, Kentucky
Two months after King was killed, a rumour of police brutality drew a crowd to a corner in the West End that broke into two nights of unrest, two dead, much of the Black business district on Twenty-Eighth Street burned, the National Guard in the streets. Parkland had been a white streetcar suburb a generation earlier. The fires marked the turn of the whole west end, and the disinvestment that followed lasted decades.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
