The 1928 Okeechobee hurricane

The lake's dike failed in the night and drowned at least 2,500 people in the farm towns south of Okeechobee, most of them Black migrant workers. About 1,600 are buried in a mass grave here at Port Mayaca. Hundreds more were buried in a West Palm Beach pauper's field that stayed unmarked until 2002. Zora Neale Hurston put the storm at the center of Their Eyes Were Watching God, and the Hoover Dike around the lake is the direct answer to it.
