Sabine Pass was the second largest town in Jefferson County in 1886, a working port with a new rail line and a plan to become the main harbour on this coast. On 12 October a hurricane pushed the Gulf straight through it. Eighty six people died, and of seventy seven houses only two were left standing. The town never recovered its position, and when Arthur Stilwell wanted a Gulf terminus nine years later he built a new one up the lake instead.
