Thaddeus Stevens buried where anyone could lie beside him

The congressman who drove the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments and wanted confiscated plantations broken up and given to freedmen chose a small cemetery for his grave because the larger ones in Lancaster were restricted to white burials. His epitaph, which he wrote, says he chose it to illustrate in death the principle he had advocated through a long life: the equality of man before his Creator.
