Texas created the university in a hurry to avoid integrating its own law school, an evasion the Supreme Court struck down in Sweatt v. Painter. In 1967 nearly 500 police fired thousands of rounds into a men's dormitory after a protest. The only person killed was a policeman, almost certainly by a ricochet from his own side.
