Texas buys the Harlem plantation and works it with convicts

The state bought this Brazos bottomland in the mid 1880s and made it Harlem, its second prison farm, after years of leasing prisoners out to private planters. By 1890 the penitentiary board was reporting the system debt free and Harlem valued at 200,000 dollars, and more farms followed on the model. In 1925 it covered 5,005 acres and held 260 men, with a rail spur running the cane out. It is now the Jester complex of four separate units.
