St. Helena's houses were built for bachelors who ate in a commissary

The other half of the wartime shipyard housing went up here, 284 units thrown together in 1918 and 1919 for single men who were expected to board rather than keep house. None of them had a kitchen. When the government sold the units off after the war, a kitchen had to be built onto the back of every one before anyone would buy it. The neighborhood straddles the Baltimore City and Baltimore County line, so half of it is in Dundalk and half is not.
