A beer stand opened just over the state line in 1949, aimed at the dry counties of North Carolina, and grew into the loudest roadside attraction on the East Coast: a 200 foot sombrero tower, a motel, fireworks stores, and roughly 250 miles of billboards in each direction on I-95. The Pedro signage has been called dated at best for decades, and the place has outlived every one of those arguments so far.
