South Houston and the strawberry farms Clara Barton restocked
1907
South Houston, Texas
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The Western Land Company platted this town as Dumont in 1907 and it incorporated as South Houston in 1913. Growers shipped strawberries, figs and vegetables out on the Galveston, Houston and Henderson tracks. The berries were there because Clara Barton's Red Cross had bought a million and a half strawberry plants for Gulf Coast farmers ruined by the 1900 hurricane, which turned this stretch of Harris County into strawberry country until the 1915 storm wrecked most of it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
