Smallpox inoculation

Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Cotton Mather learned the practice from Onesimus, an enslaved West African who described being inoculated as a boy at home. Mather and Dr. Zabdiel Boylston tried it during an epidemic against furious opposition, someone threw a bomb through Mather's window, and the inoculated died at a seventh the rate. It is the first controlled trial in American medicine.
