Sleepy Hollow Country Club, a Vanderbilt house turned clubhouse
1911
Briarcliff Manor, New York
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The clubhouse here is Woodlea, a 140 room Italian Renaissance Revival mansion McKim, Mead and White built for Elliott Fitch Shepard and Margaret Louisa Vanderbilt Shepard between 1892 and 1895 at a cost of two million dollars. The club was founded around the house in 1911. It is a fair summary of what the lower Hudson was for around 1900: a place where a private house the size of a hotel could be repurposed as somewhere to change your shoes before golf.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
