Shrewsbury Cemetery, the burying ground of the community built on the camp
1865
Jefferson, Louisiana
The old burial ground sits on the site of the Camp Parapet fortification and serves Ross Church and First Zion Church, which is why it is also called First Zion Cemetery. The Black community of Shrewsbury took shape on this land after the Civil War, in the same place where freedom seekers had come to the Union camp. This is where it buried its dead.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
