Schuyler Colfax and the railroad bribes
1869
South Bend, Indiana
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
A South Bend newspaper editor who became Speaker of the House and then Grant's vice president, and was destroyed by the Crédit Mobilier scandal, shares in a construction company handed to congressmen who could vote it money. He was dropped from the ticket, went home, and spent his last years on the lecture circuit talking about Lincoln.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
