Save the Redwoods and the memorial groves

Three men drove the new road north in 1917, found crews felling trees two thousand years old to make grape stakes and shingles, and founded a league to buy the groves outright rather than argue about them. They sold memorial groves to families a few acres at a time. That patchwork became Humboldt Redwoods, which still holds the largest surviving stand of old-growth coast redwood anywhere.
