Sanibel and the shells
1974
Sanibel, Florida

Sanibel runs east to west rather than north to south like the rest of the coast, so it works as a shelf catching what the Gulf pushes up, which makes it one of the best shelling beaches in the world and gives the local bent-over walk its name, the Sanibel Stoop. The island incorporated in 1974 specifically to stop the county zoning it into high-rises, and capped its own population.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
