San Mateo buys itself a park, and Toyonaka sends a tea garden
1922
San Mateo, California
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Voters passed an 80,000 dollar bond in 1922 to buy 16 acres of Charles Polhemus's old holding and turn it into the city's first public park. The Japanese tea garden inside it came later as a gift marking the sister city tie with Toyonaka, Osaka. The same block also holds a rose garden, the San Mateo Arboretum and a miniature train that has been carrying children in circles for decades.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
