Sacajawea's grave
1884
Fort Washakie, Wind River Reservation, Wyoming
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Shoshone tradition holds that Sacajawea returned to her people and died at Wind River in 1884 as an old woman, and she is buried here under a granite marker between her sons. The historical record mostly says she died in 1812 at Fort Manuel. The Shoshone account says that was another wife. The grave sits on the reservation of the only Eastern Shoshone land never lost, and the argument between the two stories is itself a piece of American history.
