Rosewood
1923
Rosewood, Levy County, Florida

A prosperous Black hamlet destroyed over the first week of 1923 by white mobs following an unproven accusation, with residents hunted through the swamps in winter. The official toll of eight dead is widely considered low. The town was never rebuilt and the survivors scattered and kept silent for decades. In 1994 Florida paid compensation to survivors and descendants, the first state law of its kind, and a lone historical marker on Route 24 is most of what stands here now.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
