The East St. Louis massacre

White mobs attacked Black neighbourhoods over two days in July 1917, burning houses and shooting people as they ran out, after months of tension over Black workers hired during a strike. The count of the dead runs from thirty nine to several hundred depending on who is doing the counting, and thousands crossed the bridge to St. Louis and did not come back. The NAACP marched in silence down Fifth Avenue in New York about it that summer.
