Rockwood Hall, the second largest house in America
1886
Mount Pleasant, New York
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
William Rockefeller, who co-founded Standard Oil with his brother John D., expanded this Hudson bluff mansion to 204 rooms, making it the largest private house in the country apart from Biltmore. The grounds ran to a thousand acres. The house was demolished and the land is now an 88 acre public section of the Rockefeller State Park Preserve, so the terraces and foundations are all that a visitor sees.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
