Rockhaven Sanitarium, run by women for women when asylums did the opposite

Agnes Richards, a psychiatric nurse who had served in the First World War, opened a sanitarium in the Crescenta Valley in 1923 that admitted only women and was staffed by women. Patients lived in cottages rather than wards and were kept busy in the gardens, at a time when most institutions offered restraint and isolation instead. Billie Burke stayed here, and Marilyn Monroe paid to keep her mother Gladys at Rockhaven from 1953 to 1966. Glendale bought the property in 2008 and it reached the National Register in 2016.
