Ringling builds Cà d'Zan

John and Mable Ringling built a Venetian Gothic palace on the bay, terracotta, coloured glass, a marble terrace running down to the water where their gondola tied up. Mable died two years after it was finished and John lost nearly everything in the Depression, living in it alone with $311 to his name when he died in 1936.
