Portsmouth, a village that emptied
1971
Portsmouth Island, North Carolina

A port of six hundred people whose work was lightering, offloading deep-draft ships so they could cross the shallow inlet. A hurricane opened a better inlet elsewhere in 1846 and the trade left. The last two residents departed in 1971, and the church, post office and houses are kept standing, empty, reachable only by boat.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
