Plane crashes into the Bank of America building

On January 5, 2002, four months after September 11, a 15-year-old flight student named Charles Bishop took a Cessna 172 from the St. Pete-Clearwater airport without permission, flew over the control tower at MacDill Air Force Base with a Coast Guard helicopter trying to wave him off, and at 5:03 p.m. put the plane into the 28th floor of the 42-storey Bank of America tower downtown. He was the only person killed; the two people on that floor were unhurt and one lawyer's office was destroyed. A note in his pocket praised bin Laden. Investigators found no link to anyone and called it a suicide. His mother sued the maker of the acne drug Accutane for 70 million dollars and dropped the case in 2007.
