Pittsburgh's airport invents the airport shopping mall
1992

The midfield terminal that opened here in 1992 was built for a USAir hub that later collapsed, and it came with something no American airport had tried: a full retail mall with about a hundred shops and restaurants, priced the same as in town. That street pricing rule broke the old assumption that a captive traveller pays double. Every airport concourse that now looks like a shopping centre is copying this one.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
