Piper, the Model T of the air
1937
Lock Haven, Pennsylvania
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Piper built the Cub here from 1937, a fabric-and-tube trainer simple enough to teach most of America's wartime pilots their first hour, and cheap enough to be called the Model T of the air. Four out of five American military pilots in the Second World War learned on one. Floods on the Susquehanna finally pushed the company to Florida in 1984. The old plant is a museum, and half the Cubs ever made are still flying.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
