Corn, coal, river and rail in one place made this the largest distilling town on earth, and for years Peoria County paid more federal liquor tax than any other district in the country. The Whiskey Trust ran from here. Prohibition ended it, and the great plants were turned to industrial alcohol and then to penicillin, which is a stranger legacy than the whiskey.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
