Peacemakers keeps a storefront open on Chene Street after the street emptied
1994
Chene Street, Detroit
Chene Street was the shopping street of Detroit's Polish east side, and the plant closures and the 1981 Poletown clearance took most of its customers away. Steve Upshur, who had been running Bible studies on the east side since the 1970s, opened the Chene Street Outreach Ministry in a building here in 1994 and went full time with it in 1997. It runs a large community garden for produce and two halfway houses called Jesus House and Mercy House, and holds services on Sunday evenings.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
