Pawtucket Falls, the drop that made Lowell possible

The Merrimack drops thirty two feet in a little under a mile here, and the falls were a Pennacook fishing ground long before they were anything else. In 1821 a group of Boston investors quietly bought up the small canal that had been dug around the falls to float New Hampshire timber downriver. They rebuilt it as a power canal, and every mill in Lowell ran off this one piece of moving water.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
