Old Economy Village, home of the celibate Harmonists
1824
Ambridge, PA
German pietists who followed George Rapp out of Wurttemberg founded this settlement in 1824, their third and last in America. They held all property in common, swore off marriage and sex, and got rich anyway on textiles, whiskey and shrewd investment. A National Historic Landmark district since 1966, the surviving village sits inside downtown Ambridge, which was built on land the society sold off once its members had stopped being replaced.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
