Monaca began as a breakaway utopian colony

The town was incorporated in 1840 as Phillipsburg, settled by the New Philadelphia Society, a faction that had split off from the Harmonists across the river and brought marriage back with them. The name later changed to honour Monacatootha, an Oneida leader who worked with the British in the Ohio Country. Fire clay in the hills kept glassmaking here long after the founders were gone.
