Ohio City fights the Bridge War over the Columbus Street span
1836
Ohio City, Cleveland, Ohio
Ohio City was its own city on the west bank of the Cuyahoga, and it lived off traffic that had to stop there before crossing. Cleveland opened the Columbus Street bridge in 1836 and wagons could suddenly bypass the place entirely. Ohio City's marshal tried to dynamite his end of the bridge, the charge fizzled, and a crowd came back with picks, clubs and muskets to find Cleveland's mayor waiting with armed militia. The courts settled it by ordering two bridges, and Cleveland annexed the loser in 1854.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
