Ochsner Clinic opened the Deep South's first group practice

Five doctors opened the Ochsner Clinic on 2 January 1942, in the middle of the war, as the first group medical practice in the Deep South. Alton Ochsner had been arguing since 1939 that cigarette smoking causes lung cancer, more than two decades before the Surgeon General said so. The hospital here in Jefferson is now the headquarters of the largest health system in Louisiana.
