C. L. Franklin led this Linwood Street congregation from 1946 to 1979 and made it the organising centre of the civil rights movement in Detroit. On 29 March 1969 the Republic of New Africa rented the sanctuary for a convention. A shootout outside left one Detroit police officer dead and another wounded, police then raided the church and held about 150 people inside without lawyers. Franklin refused to apologise and said the group could come back, without guns.
