Mount Vernon covers about four square miles, and its public high school has sent an improbable number of players out of that ground into the NBA, among them Gus and Ray Williams, Rodney and Scooter McCray, and Ben Gordon. The school in its present form dates from the 1964 merger of A.B. Davis High School with Edison Tech. It has won nine New York state basketball titles.
