A grand boulevard built around Confederate statues raised a generation after the war, as segregation was being written into law. Arthur Ashe was added at the far end in 1996 after a bitter argument. In 2020 the Confederate figures came down, and the empty Lee pedestal covered in protest paint was called the most influential work of American protest art of the year.
