Monroe Street Cemetery, the west side's only public burying ground for sixty years

Josiah Barber and Richard Lord sold six acres here in January 1836 on the condition that the ground be used forever for public burial. Two months later the City of Ohio took out its charter, two days ahead of Cleveland's, and its council platted the plots, appointed a sexton and bought a hearse. After Cleveland annexed Ohio City in 1854 this stayed the only public cemetery on the west side until the late 1890s. More than 500 people buried here served in wars running from the Revolution through the Second World War.
