Two Houston investors bought four square miles here in 1890 and advertised it in St. Louis as a land of eternal summer. W. R. McElroy bought eighty acres nearby in 1893 and named his townsite Missouri City to ride on their campaign, registering it in 1894. The Missourians largely stayed home and the first settlers came from Arlington, Dallas and Fort Worth. The name stuck anyway, and the city still trades on the Show Me nickname.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
