Invented purely to keep tourists in town past Labor Day, a 'bathing beauty' contest on the beach that the hotels hoped would stretch the season by a week. It grew into a televised institution watched by tens of millions, ran for decades on a rule barring any contestant who was not white, and was staged for most of its life in the great domed hall on the boardwalk here.
