Meraux carries the name of the sheriff's family that owned much of the parish

Louis A. Meraux, a Tulane trained physician everyone called Doc, was elected sheriff of St. Bernard Parish in 1924 and held the office until he died in 1938. Those were the years when the parish's maze of bayous made it one of the easiest places in the country to land liquor, and Al Capone turned up here at least once. The family's land ran from the Mississippi levee back to Lake Borgne, and the community that grew on it took the family name.
