Mayport, the shrimp village at the mouth of the St. Johns

David Palmer and Darius Ferris platted Mayport Mills in 1841 on lumber and fishing. Connecticut boat captains moved south in the 1870s once word spread that the river mouth ran thick with shad and mullet, and by the 1950s shrimp docks filled the waterfront. Mayport shrimp still take their name from the brackish water where the St. Johns meets the Atlantic, though fuel costs, regulation and imports cut the fleet from dozens of boats down to a handful.
