A reef half a mile off Pillar Point turns winter swell into waves that break at twenty-five feet and occasionally twice that. Jeff Clark surfed it by himself for fifteen years because nobody believed him about it. The break is named for a German shepherd who swam out after the first surfers to look at it and was made to wait on the beach.
