Margaret Sanger opens the country's first birth control clinic in Brownsville

On 16 October 1916 Sanger, her sister Ethel Byrne and an interpreter named Fania Mindell opened a storefront clinic on Amboy Street and advertised it in English, Yiddish and Italian. Police shut it down after ten days. Sanger was convicted, refused to promise she would not do it again, and served thirty days in the Queens County penitentiary, and the appeal of that conviction produced the 1918 ruling that let New York doctors prescribe contraception.
