Manzanar and Executive Order 9066
1942
Manzanar, Owens Valley, California
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Roosevelt signed the order in Washington in February 1942. Its consequence stood here. Over 11,000 Japanese Americans, two thirds of them citizens, were held behind wire in the Owens Valley with the searchlights turned inward. Ansel Adams and Dorothea Lange both photographed it, and internees built gardens whose stonework is still being uncovered.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
