Louisiana bans French in schools, then founds CODOFIL
1968
Lafayette, Louisiana
The 1921 constitution required English-only schooling, and a generation of Cajun and Creole children were punished for speaking the only language they knew at home, made to write lines, hit, humiliated into raising English-speaking children of their own. In 1968 the state reversed itself and created an agency to promote French. It imported teachers from France and Belgium, whose formal French was not the language anyone here actually spoke.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
