Los Angeles Air Force Base and the missile crash program
1954
El Segundo, California
Bernard Schriever took command of the Air Force's Western Development Division in August 1954 and set it up in a disused schoolhouse on Manchester Boulevard in Inglewood, behind a guarded fence. From there the division ran the crash programmes that produced the Atlas, Thor, Titan and Minuteman missiles and the first American reconnaissance satellites. The organisation grew into this base in El Segundo, which still buys military space systems, now for the Space Force.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
