The canyon, the creek and the town of Niwot all take their name from the Southern Arapaho chief Niwot, whose name means left hand and whose band wintered in the Boulder valley. Prospectors found placer gold at Gold Run just above here in January 1859. Niwot let them stay the winter, and by 10 February the same men had platted a town company on the ground they had been lent.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
