Lees Ferry, the only crossing for hundreds of miles

For fifty six years this was the only place a wagon could cross the Colorado between Moab and the Nevada line, and the man who started it was hiding. John D. Lee took the crossing in 1872 while wanted for the Mountain Meadows Massacre, called the place Lonely Dell, and was taken from it and executed by firing squad at the massacre ground five years later. His wife Emma kept running the boat. The ferry ended in 1928 when a load went into the river and drowned three men, months before the bridge that replaced it opened.
