Huddie Ledbetter arrived here in January 1918 to serve a sentence for killing a relative in a fight, and spent seven years working the state sugar fields. He played guitar for the other prisoners and for Governor Pat Neff, who visited on Sundays, and wrote him a song asking for release. Neff pardoned him in January 1925, on one of his last days in office. The farm opened in 1909, was renamed the Central Unit, and closed in 2011 as the first Texas state prison shut down in modern times.
